Are IVF babies healthy in Body & Mind?

infertility is treatable. Millions of childless parents are blessed with the boon of IVF or In Vitro Fertilization. This discovery in the field of medical science has helped a lot of couples fulfilling their dreams of being a parent. But to date, questions regarding its integrity hover around the minds of the would-be parents. Many people are still skeptical about it and harbor a lot of preconceived notions. One common prejudice which is prevalent even among people is that IVF babies are not normal & healthy. As they are not offshoots of a natural process & happen to develop in cutting-edge laboratories under the supervision of doctors, there is a misconception that IVF babies cannot be as normal & healthy as the ones born naturally.

But the truth is far from it. This false belief is only a myth & not a fact.

Research shows IVF children are as normal & healthy as other children as far as their physical attributes and mental capacity are concerned. And they are naturally born like other children. All one needs is to do their share of research and consult an insightful and knowledgeable doctor to dispel such rampant myths.

 Natural Conception VS IVF Conception:

One common thing is that both processes involve the fertilization of the eggs by the sperm. The natural fusion process takes place in the fallopian tube (after sexual intercourse). In IVF, the fertilization takes place in a dish or test tube in a special lab designed for the process under the supervision of seasoned doctors. In the natural conception, the formed embryo travels to the uterus, where it implants for pregnancy. In IVF, the doctor inserts the fetus into the uterus of women through the cervix. The process of women getting pregnant hereafter is as normal as it happens in sexual intercourse between partners. After the embryo(s) implants in the uterus, the following phases are the same as natural conception. Hence, if you think

logically, you will understand that the health of a test tube baby is not at all stake. They can be as healthy and ailment free as a baby born through a natural pregnancy. The ART technology during the  IVF treatment stands for Assisted Reproductive Technology, and not Artificial Reproductive Technology.

Why do couples opt for IVF?

Couples opt for IVF because:

• The male partner is unable to produce sperms or high-quality sperm.

• The female partner cannot produce eggs or high-quality eggs

• There is a blockage in the Fallopian tubes.

Their sexual intercourse does not produce an embryo hence female partner can’t get pregnant. The fertilization and fusion of eggs in the lab is an alternative to sexual intercourse. Once the fusion of sperm and eggs in the lab happens, the embryo formed transferred into the uterus. And after that, the whole process is the same as in natural conception. After the embryo transfer into the uterus, the woman gets pregnant and gives birth to a child after the stipulated time.

Do IVF babies bear higher health risks?

Research has shown that the factors responsible for the abnormalities could be male or female fertility and ages of the parents rather than the process itself. On top of these findings, it is evident that there is always a higher risk in multiple births (as experts transfer more than one embryo to maximize the chances of getting pregnant) compared to singleton births.

Should you go for an IVF?

IVF babies are as normal & healthy as other children. It is impossible to distinguish between an IVF baby and a naturally conceived baby. Having considered all the facts, IVF is still a boon to those who can not expect a baby in a normal process. The majority of the babies born through this process are both physically and mentally fit & healthy. It assures the success of the process. Following some precautions, you can gift yourself the happiness you always deserved.
