How long does IVF take?

Are you planning to take up IVF treatment, but worried about how long the process takes?

During the IVF procedure, mature eggs are retrieved from ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a lab. Then the embryo is transferred to a uterus. One full IVF cycle takes about three weeks. Sometimes these steps are split into different parts. The process can take longer. It may last from two to six weeks.

IVF involves multiple visits to the clinic:

One day for checkup/ pre-IVF preparation, which includes the following. These are done before the start of your IVF cycle

Some blood investigations for the wife and the husband

Semen analysis for the husband if not done in the last 6 months

If tube-test (HSG) is not done, it may be needed

If needed, the doctor may prescribe a diagnostic hysteroscopy

Approximately 15 days of IVF procedure. This includes the following

Injections administered every day, from the 2nd day after periods until the day of egg pick-up (approximately day 13)

Ultrasound scans, about 4 to 5 times during the IVF cycle

    Consultations with the doctor

Blood investigations to track the progress of the IVF stimulation

One day for pick-up, done under anaesthesia

One do for the embryo transfer – this may happen in the same cycle as the pick up or in a different cycle.

It is best to plan for time duration of 3 week. If the embryo transfer does not happen in the same cycle as the IVF pick up, then the woman needs to plan for an additional 2-3 weeks of availability for preparing for the embryo transfer and also for the actual embryo transfer procedure.
