Website positioning: from 0 to 30 thousand visits in 6 months

Website positioning : In this guide we show you step by step how we positioned a website with traffic from 0 to 30 thousand visits in 6 months

The positioning of a website is a long and complex process, but if well conducted it can lead to excellent results in a short time.

When we talk about website positioning, this happens mainly through the optimization of the contents, images and structure of the site itself.

In addition, you need to plan an effective link building strategy and study the most appropriate keywords for your industry.

With the right precautions and a little patience, it is possible to position websites in a few weeks or less.

However, it is important to remember that positioning is not an exact science and that the results obtained may vary according to the sector of belonging and the methods of promotion adopted.

To obtain an effective positioning , it is advisable to contact professionals in the sector and rely on specialized agencies in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) .

But now let’s go into details, and to do so, let’s take as a reference a case study by the guys of contentellect.com , an American seo agency that explains in detail its Keyword Clustering strategy, which they use in their website positioning strategies.

Website positioning: Keyword Clustering strategy

Before getting to the heart of the process, let’s try to understand what this complicated English word means. First of all, Keyword Clustering , translated into Italian means clustering key, but what does it mean?

In very simple words, it consists of grouping keywords by sector, with a main keyword and many other related keywords that complement the insights with many other contents.

To make you understand the concept well, look at the image below, where you can see the main keyword (seed) and the topics with keywords related to it.

Keyword clustering is one of the most powerful SEO content tactics  you can implement for website ranking.

But let’s see yet another example, with a familiar SEO Tool, Seozoom .

As you can see in the image below, this editorial tool helps you understand how to create an editorial plan.

There are 6 main topics to cover in the article and 28 secondary topics that you will need to develop in order to fully cover the topic.

Used correctly you can dominate your niche without relying heavily on backlinks.

But now let’s get into the details of Mark Whitman’s case study and his contenttellect.

Positioning of websites on Google: let’s see how

Below I’ve defined the exact  keyword grouping process  we followed to help a tech startup called  PerkUp  go from near-zero traffic to 30,000 monthly searches in less than 6 months.

This content creation and keyword research strategy is really powerful for ranking websites on Google , especially when your website has just started.

Let’s begin.

PerkUp is a fantastic funded start-up based in San Francisco. They help companies reward employees in unique and fun ways that go beyond gift cards.

Thomas , their founder and CEO, contacted us in early September 2021 . He was looking for a scalable content strategy to drive heavy traffic and position the website quickly.

Website positioning: Challenge accepted

In the analysis of PerkUp’s Website Positioning , in September ’21 it had very little content and even less traffic. Here is a snapshot of Ahrefs taken on September 1, 2021.

And here’s how things stand in February 2022. There are six months to go, which in the world of SEO is fast.

So how did we get here?

The truth is that both the PerkUp team and ours have worked hard to generate these results.

SEO is difficult and complex .

Simplifying the results into a single strategy would be false and misleading.

But if I were to filter out the three most important components, they would be:

  • A keyword grouping process that helped us formulate a topical authority content strategy
  • Bulk content creation and publication system for fast indexing
  • A streamlined on-page SEO process that prioritized siled interconnection

Let’s take a look at each.

Website positioning: Keyword Cluster -> Sector Authority

The idea behind keyword clustering is to become an authority on your niche.

Google rewards websites that create deep, in-depth content that covers a subject area in its entirety.

For example, the FreshBooks billing software company has 292 articles that talk about billing.

You can assume that they have covered this topic in more depth than most, if not all, sites on the web.

From templates, formats, designs and examples, to more specific topics like PO numbers on invoices, finding pending invoices, and creating an invoice in Google Docs, Freshbooks has delved into billing and paid dividends.

According to the Ahrefs report above, they get around 146,000 hits a month from these articles alone. When you become a topical authority, it’s hard for Google to ignore you.

With PerkUp we used the  keyword grouping tool  ,  KeyClusters  , to create keyword groups based on the main topic silos for the niche.

For example, a big silo in the employee rewards niche is content related to  work anniversaries  .

With this large silo in mind, we generated keywords for work anniversaries using Ahref’s Keyword Explorer. Ahrefs found 7,118 keywords with terms matching job anniversaries.

After refining the keyword list to remove very low volume keywords, there are around 630 keywords left to load into KeyCluster.

KeyClusters runs each keyword through Google, identifying and grouping those where 3 or more URLs are shared.

The logic here is that if 3 pages in the Google SERP can rank for the same set of keywords, then you just need to create an article to rank for this group of keywords.

Here is a snapshot of the information KeyClusters gave us. Each line shows a unique article that we can write to target the main keyword and all its variations.

Armed with the keyword cluster data, not only did we have our list of articles for the job anniversary silo, but we could educate our authors on the exact variations of keywords to use in the article and the search intent of the article. keyword group.

We followed the exact same process for 5 other silos in the employee rewards niche to create a huge content strategy for PerkUp .

Bulk Content Creation -> Publish Speed

People often ask “how much content should I create?”

The answer is a lot and it should be posted as quickly as possible .

To become an authority in a niche, you don’t need to publish 3 or 4 articles on a topic.

This simply doesn’t demonstrate niche skills.

Instead, you need to try to cover a subject area in its entirety. This can often mean creating 50-200 or more articles .

Content on this scale requires a  nifty content writing machine  , which of course we have (our team produces around 1 million words per month!).

Lots of content also means you’ll end up creating some articles that are very broad and top-of-funnel. Some may not even make sense for your niche. Don’t panic.

Remember, the idea is to cover the subject area in its entirety . You see each article as part of a larger matrix that covers the entire knowledge base on a subject area and supports your position as a disciplinary authority.

For PerkUp, we knew we needed a lot of content to become a niche expert on the broader topic:  employee rewards  .

Our keyword clustering analysis identified many articles in 6 main silos. We have prioritized these in a list of 150 article ideas.

We then ran each article through  Phrase , an on-page SEO content optimization  tool , to get a rough estimate of the word count for each article.

This came to around 200,000,000 words. Here is a snapshot of our article tracker.

However, creating a lot of content is only one piece of the puzzle for website ranking.

It is also necessary to accelerate the speed of publication . The faster the better.

How come?

It can take Google months to index  new content, especially on a new website. And then it can take many more months after indexing to actually rank.

Suppose you publish an article today. If your site is relatively new, it may take 2-3 months to index and then, assuming you do a great SEO job, another 6-12 months to rank.

Drip feeding of a few items each month will take years to see results. The faster you post, the faster you will rank.

See how things went for PerkUp when new pages were published.

Website Positioning: On-page SEO -> Silo’ed Interlinking

The trick to publishing fast is to have a lean system and a smooth on-page SEO process .

Complex templates and many bureaucratic processes for signing articles slow down the whole process.

Try to remove all blocks.

Focus on the 80:20 of on-page SEO when posting.

Specifically, the following:

  • URL slug -> primary keyword targeting
  • Title header and meta title -> primary keyword targeting
  • Headings (H2, H3) -> variations in hierarchical and targeting keywords
  • Images -> every 250-350 words with keyword variation alt tags
  • External links -> to authoritative (non-competitive) sources.
  • Internal links -> to other items in the same silo on exact or close match anchors

It is worth dwelling on the last point.

I cannot stress enough the importance of internal connection , within a silo.

The idea here is to link your articles to anchor text which signals to Google what each article is about.

Not only does this help with indexing, but when you start scoring backlinks , these authority signals will flow throughout your site and help other pages rank.

PerkUp has done an amazing job of linking their items with internal siled links.

Here’s a snapshot of one of the articles – see how 3 internal links were positioned on good anchors in just a few paragraphs.

Fast posting really helps with this as you can see all internal linking opportunities at once, instead of forgetting about internal linking opportunities when posting sporadically.

Website Placement: Merge All

As you can see, there is a lot going on in a winning SEO content strategy .

In the case of PerkUp, it’s clear that large-scale quality content works wonders.

To create a great content plan you should really use keyword clustering . It will help you identify article ideas, group keywords based on semantic relationships, and avoid keyword cannibalization.

Keyword clustering will also give you full visibility on the scale of a content project.

How much content do you actually need to effectively cover a subject area? This will help define the budget.

Once you have a plan and the machine to create content, remember to post fast, focusing on the 80:20 of on-page SEO and linking articles intelligently.
