Shortkro is a small independent blog about the practical side of business and home life. It has been running since 2021, and the brief has not really changed since: write things down properly the first time, so somebody facing the same decision does not have to work it out from scratch.
What we cover
The subjects here look broad on a category list and are narrower in practice. Nearly everything falls into one of a few areas: buying and stockholding for small retailers, running a small business, hiring people to do work on your home, and the everyday technology that sits around both.
The common thread is decisions that cost money and are usually made in a hurry, with poor information. A shop owner deciding how deep to buy a size run, a homeowner choosing between repairing an appliance and replacing it, a small business trying to work out why a profitable month left the bank account emptier. These are ordinary problems, and there is more nonsense written about them than there needs to be.
How the writing is done
Articles are written by one person, edited before publication, and updated when something turns out to be wrong. There is no editorial calendar and no attempt to publish on a schedule, which is why the archive is uneven. A piece goes up when it is worth reading.
We try to be specific. Where an article gives a rule of thumb, it says where the rule breaks down. Where a subject genuinely depends on circumstances, it says so rather than pretending there is one answer. Advice that works for every reader is usually advice too vague to act on.
What we do not do
We do not accept guest posts. The site ran an open submissions policy for a period and the quality was not good enough to justify it, so it was closed.
We are not a substitute for professional advice. Anything here touching on money, legal obligations, gas, electrical work or structural building work is general background written to help you ask better questions, not a professional opinion on your situation.
